Best Hiking Elopement Locations: From a Photographer Who’s Hiked Over 1200 miles

There’s something about hiking elopements that just feels right. Trading the stress of a big wedding for a trail that leads to sweeping views, fresh air, and a sense of freedom – that’s where memories are made. Whether you’re looking for an easy stroll to an overlook or a multi-day trek to say your vows under the stars, the world is full of trails that make the perfect backdrop for your day. I can promise you this: no matter what location you choose, a hiking elopement gives you a wedding day you’ll actually remember.

Hey, I’m Bryan, a hiking elopement photographer based in Georgia who spends most of my free time on the same trails I recommend to couples. I’ve hiked in rain, snow, and summer heat, scouted hidden overlooks (over 1200 miles across 32 states, 15 countries, and 5 continents), and even helped couples figure out which boots won’t destroy their feet on their wedding day. Bonus, stay to the end of the blog to see what adventures my wife and I have gotten in to!

My job isn’t just to take photos, but also to guide you through the planning process so your elopement feels adventurous, meaningful, and totally stress-free. If you’re looking for someone to help you dream up (and actually pull off) a hiking wedding day, you’re in the right place., I’ve built this guide to help you dream up what’s possible. These are some of the best hiking elopement locations in the U.S. and around the world. Let’s dive in!

How to Use This Guide

This isn’t a ranked list, but rather an inspiration-packed guide to help you find the spot that feels most like you. For each location, you’ll find a little about the vibe, some of the trails or views that make it special, the best time of year to go, and tips I’ve learned as a photographer who lives for the outdoors. Think of this as a trail map pointing you toward landscapes and adventures that could shape your wedding day into something unforgettable.

You can always use the Side “Table of Contents” Bar to navigate to a specific location again or any other section that you found helpful.

Finally, this guide is just the tip of the iceberg to help you get inspired, but if you are thinking of a location that you don’t see on this list, reach out to me and we will work together to see if a hiking elopement would be feasible. Keep reading to get inspired!

Best United States Hiking Elopement Locations

The United States is home to some of the most diverse landscapes in the world! So naturally, it has its own dedicated section in this guide. Here are some of the best United States Hiking Elopement Locations!

Appalachian Mountains, Georgia

My backyard, so it has a special place in my heart. The southern stretch of the Appalachian Mountains in Georgia is rugged, underrated, and perfect for couples who want big views without big crowds. Trails like Preachers Rock and Blood Mountain deliver epic overlooks in just a few miles, while Tallulah Gorge State Park gives you waterfalls and dramatic cliffsides. These mountains are a little quieter than Tennessee or North Carolina, so if you’re looking for peace and intimacy among the quiet forest, this is the spot.

Best for: Sunrise hikes, forest vibes, elopements with solitude
Best Months to Elope Here: September–November for color, or April–May for wildflowers
Average Hiking Expertise: Novice
Insider Tip: The weather here changes quickly, pack a jacket and be prepared for a pop-up shower. Don’t worry though, we won’t let it stop the elopement fun!

How to Choose the Right Hiking Elopement Location

When it comes to planning a hiking elopement, the trail you choose shapes your entire experience. The right spot isn’t just about epic views (though those are a huge perk!) – it’s about finding a location that fits your relationship, your comfort level, and the kind of day you want to have. Here are some things to keep in mind when picking your perfect hiking elopement location:

1. Know your fitness level (and be honest about it).

Hiking elopements don’t need to be 10-mile treks up mountains to have the huge payoff. Some of the most stunning spots are just a short walk from the trailhead. Be realistic about how far you want to hike in wedding attire (or if you want to hike up in regular attire and change at the top), and think about whether you want to arrive sweaty and tired or fresh and ready for vows.

If hiking isn’t a huge part of your life, choose beginner or novice trails. You’ll still get incredible views without the exhaustion. If you’re an avid hiker like me, don’t be afraid to choose some longer trails. It is what you love to do with your person after all!

2. Think about accessibility for guests.

If you’re bringing loved ones along, consider their comfort too. Some trails are guest-friendly with wide paths and shorter distances, while others are better for just the two of you. If guests are joining, you can also plan a ceremony in a more accessible spot, then sneak away for a more adventurous hike just for the two of you.

3. Factor in cost and logistics.

Some parks or international locations require permits, special passes, or even hiring guides. I don’t tell you that to scare you off, but rather let you know about these processes that protect the land and help keep your experience special. Factor them into your budget and timeline. Flights, lodging, and seasonal availability can all play into the cost, too.

4. Consider the time of year (and the weather).

Seasonality can make or break your hiking elopement experience. Wildflower meadows peak in summer, fall brings golden leaves, and winter often means closures or snow gear. High-elevation spots are often only accessible a few months out of the year. Choosing the right season can completely change the vibe of your day.

5. Decide on your “must-have” vibe.

Do you picture yourselves on a windswept cliff? In a quiet forest? Standing by a turquoise alpine lake? Your location should feel like you. Start by writing down 3–4 things that matter most (views, privacy, proximity, certain terrain) and let that guide your decision. Or take a look at the questions I have below!

6. Don’t underestimate the little things.

Parking availability, trail traffic, bathroom access, and even cell service can all impact your day. If you want total privacy, consider sunrise or weekday elopements. If you want things a little easier, look for trails that use cable cars or shuttles to cut down on effort while still delivering epic views.

7. Work with someone who knows hiking.

This is where having a photographer who’s also an outdoor nerd (like me 🙋‍♂️) can really help. I know the trails, the microclimates, and the hidden spots where you can have your moment without feeling rushed or crowded. I’ve planned countless hiking elopements plus my own personal hiking trips for my wife and I. So I’ve learned a thing or two! Plus, I can help you navigate permits, backup locations, and logistics so you don’t have to stress.

Quick Checklist: Questions to Ask When Choosing Your Hiking Elopement Location

  • How far do we actually want to hike in our wedding clothes?
  • Do we want to include guests, and if so, can they handle this trail?
  • What kind of scenery feels most “us” (mountains, waterfalls, forest, coastline)?
  • What season/weather fits our vision best?
  • Are permits, passes, or travel costs within our budget?
  • How much privacy do we want (and do we need to plan for sunrise/sunset)?
  • Do we feel confident navigating this area on our own, or do we want a local expert to guide us?

Your answers to these questions will usually point you right toward the kind of trail or destination that makes the most sense. And remember: there’s no “right” way to do a hiking elopement! The best spot is the one that lets you feel present, connected, and fully yourselves.
